I have sewn a burda sheath dress. I only have to hem the lining and hand stitch it to the garment lining. I am going to start on a jacket next. So I haven't been slacking. Hopefully I will be able to post pictures soon. I am also try my hand at my first knitting project. Measuring the yarn so that you have enough working yarn to cast on with a little more time consuming. In crocheting don't have to measure just start crocheting, LOL.
Well back to the measuring.

Knitting- Why Did I Wait So Long To Learn How?

It has been a while since my last post. I wasn't feeling the best. But during my down time I did purchase Boye's I Taught Myself Knitting. I couldn't believe how easy it was. For some reason I thought that knitting was difficult. I guess because of the two needles. I am a crocheter and was use to the hook. But within a few days I had learned to do a garter st, a stockinette st, and even a simple cable stitch. I kicking myself for not taking the plunge last year. Yesterday, I was browsing Knitpicks a now spinning has caught my eye. I will have to do some research. It seems interesting.

On the sewing front I am in the planning and gather stage for some fall garments. I am ready to get back to it.
Question: What are the best books for beginner knitters to have? Your suggestion will be appreciated.

Fabric Used: A heather grey cotton rib knit.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:My usual swayback and lower the waist at the front. I was trying to get this finished before heading to Chicago that I forgot to stablize the neckline and shoulders. I didn't realize it not until I try it on and there was a gap at the neck in back. I tried to fix the problem by resewing the center back seam eliminating 1 inch and that is when I realized that I did not stablize the neck line. OOPS!

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?I will not sew this again. I have already made two tops from this pattern and I have many more that I want to sew.

Conclusion: Great easy top. Just remember to stablize the neck line.

Conclusion: I wore this dress on a quick trip to chicago. It was perfect for the weather.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?It is such an easy pattern to whip up. I love the fit of the skirt. It has a swingy effect.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:None. Perfect fit right out of the envelope.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?Yes it will be one of my TNT patterns.

Conclusion: Great skirt for beginners. And great wardobe builder.

I made an unintentional gathering effect at the neck line because the band did not stretch all way to the end of the neckline, but it did not ruin the overall look. I wore it Sunday June 27, 2010 and it fit well.

Were the instructions easy to follow?Yes.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?I liked the wrap detail. It gave the tunic a classy look.

Fabric Used:Vera Wang poly knit from Fabric Mart.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:Lovered the waist both in front and back and did a swayback adjustment.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?Yes I would recommend this pattern to others. I already have the dress veiw A waiting to be sewn.

Conclusion: Great dressy top.

I just wanted to do an update on my progress with Simplicity 2369. So far I have cut out view C the tunic. And I cut out New Look 6735 view E the skirt. Next on the cutting table view A the dress of Simplicity 2369. Hopefully, there will not be anymore distractions of the unwanted kind to interfere with my progress. This weekend and part of next week will be entirely for sewing.

I have truely fallen in love with sewing. I am no longer just planning to sew but I am accomplishing my goals and have had a few projects to show for it. The only way I can grow in my sewing is to SEW! And that what I intend on doing. Nothing can stop me now! When I want something new to wear I am going to sew it. Currently what I want now is a new dress. I am tracing Simplicity 2369 views A dress and C tunic.

Conclusion: A great easy pattern for making summer skirts.
This is what I wore my skirt with: A Turquoise leather jacket and black tie knot jersey sleeveless top that I already in my wardrobe on Sunday April 25,2010. The weather was rainy and cool. The perfect weather to get a final chance to wear my jacket before the summer heat.

Just the other day I said I would not buy any more patterns. Then, today when I read my emails there was an ad fromMcCalls pattern with a Big Sale of the Season. Patterns on all three sites for $2.99. I caved, because there was a top pattern that I wanted. I did very good. I only purchased two patterns. But I am officially on a pattern diet. no more patterns. I must sew what I have.
Now it on to the fun part (and sometimes frustrating part) purchasing fabric.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?I like the easy to sew nature and the shape of this boatneck shell. I suggest wearing this with a clear bra strap because the boat neck will show your bra straps.

Fabric Used:Ivory cotton lycra knit

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?As for now no, but maybe in the future. I highly recommend this for beginners.

Were the instructions easy to follow?I did not use them. Instead I follow the tip for sewing knits in the Wendy Mullin book Sew U Home Stretch.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?I love the simplicity of the cardigan.

Fabric Used:cotton jersey

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:I cut a size 14 and graded to a 16, but after some fitting I do believe I end up with a complete size 14. I also did not have enough material for the facing and collar because I had to match stripes,so I added a ruffle around the entire neckline, front, and hem of the cardi. I saw this treatment done on some cardi on HSN.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?Definitely! I am planning to make the short sleeved cardi view B in a white cotton jersey.

Conclusion: Great for a light jacket and to wear as part of a suit for summer.

Finished Object: The Cable Hat

Here it is the Cabled Hat. Here is a picture of me wearing the hat. You can see my forehead, LOL! Well that's it for hats. I did three this winter and I am proud of that. Now I'm going to try my hand at knitting with a crochet hook. I purchased the book Knit 1, Purl 1 in Crochet by Bendy Carter from Annies Attic. Bendy Carter has designed a way to use a crochet hook to get a knitted fabric. So far I have learned the slingshot method of casting on and binding off. I have not made any of the swatches yet. As I learn I will give more details.

On the sewing front,

I have purchased Wendy Mullins' Sew U Home Stretch from Half.com. I wanted to get better results when working with knits. For Spring I plan on doing an all knit wardobe. I have the patterns picked and have been purchasing fabric and I am also using knits that I have stashed. I brought three patterns during the $3.99 sale on McCalls Pattern. I got V1165, V8634, and V8194. I feel my sewing mojo trying to make a comeback.

Here is a pic of my Cloche Hat from the Crochet for Dummies how-to book. This is a great book for beginners to have in their libraries. It explains everything one needs to know about crochet in a humorous and clear tone. I am always turning to this book when I'm crocheting. The second pic is the original model from the book.

WIP: The cable hat is about 50 percent done. Here's a peek at what I have done so far. Love the texture and the color is perfect for it!

Well I have been busy crocheting. I can't get enough. I am working on another hat project from Ravelry no less. It's another cable hat. I love the texture of this hat. I also did a cloche hat from the Crochet for Dummies book. I'll have to upload a photo soon.
I haven't been sewing but I have started planning what to sew. I thinik I want start with something quick just to get the mojo going. I love the new update the McCall pattern Co. has made to their sites. Coooool!!!
Oh, I have to give kudos to Crochetme on their site update. It's also gets a Coool rating.
Well, am going back to my cable hat. It's calling me.

Finished Objects- Sewing and Crochet

Here are some things that I have finished but didn't have a chance to post about. For the Month of Tops November sew-a-long held by Faye over at Faye's Sewing Adventures, I sewed two knit Tops. The first top is New Look 6807 and the second New Look 6922. I found my crochet mojo and made a quick and simple crochet cable hat (and that's the name of the pattern) from the Raverly website. I am in love with Raverly. Now just to find out how to get their web button, LOL! I am browsing for more cable projects to crochet. I am thinking about another hat. I trying my hand at desining a cowl scarf to match the "Simple Crochet Hat".

Butterick Spring Patterns- Some Thoughts

Today Butterick's Spring patterns were released today. I have to say that finally there is hope for spring sewing. I looked at McCalls and Vogue Spring offerings and I was not that impressed. I was skeptical when I looked in my inbox and saw the email from Butterick announcing the patterns. But I have to say that I was impressed. Here are my favs:

Like the different options

All four of these patterns offer a very feminine look. Great for Spring and Summer.
Great jacket collar detail. But the jacket that caught my attention and that I think is my favorite Butterick Spring pattern is this: I love the button detail on this jacket. I can see this in a beautiful spring color linen fabric or in demin with contrast buttons and thread. Can't wait for a pattern sale. got to get this for my stash.

Finished swatching for a crochet project. I have to say it felt good to crochet again. I blocked it and I'm waiting for it to dry. Can't wait to get started on the project itself. Fair Isle crochet has caught my attention. I saw it on my favorite craft show "Knit and Crochet Today." Do anyone know of any beginner projects for this techniqque? Any other fair isle crocheters out there,LOL!

"Sewing Tip "- Making Ordinary Pressure Feet Non-Stick Feet

When sewing on vinyl a regular pressure feet stick to the fabric causing a huge mess. I found a neat solution for this problem while looking through my favorite craft supply catalog, PTFE Strips by Kandi Corp. I brought these about a year ago from Home Sew Inc.
To use:
Just apply strip to bottom of pressure foot and remove any excess strip. Make sure your needle and thread can go through the hole in the foot with ease. Then sew as you would with a non-stick foot! Its that easy. I have used these strips on my blind hem foot to edge stitch on vinyl and also on my zipper foot when inserting zippers in vinyl.
I looked a saw that Home Sew no longer carries these strips, but I checked out Kandi Corps website and they are sell a PTFE 5"X 9" sheet for $4.00.

No sewing, but brainstorming. I am reading my fav mags to get ideas in fabric and shapes and embellishments. It is overwhelming at times because you see so many beautiful garments. I'm in the stage of picking patterns and fabrics. Just looking around the net. What I have decided to do is to plan my fall wardrobe in capsules. Doing either 2-4 pieces with a central theme to help me focus. Also within the capsule highlight one of the fall colors. What you guys think?

Fall Project 1: Quilted Suede Handbag

Finished V7982! This project was an easy and fun one. I love the look of this bag and its on trend. I am noticing a lot of quilted juackets, shoes, and handbags. I would recommend this for anyone looking for an easy and fabulous project. Sorry, I couldn't get a good picture of the quilting.

Just wanted to touch base. I have finished the quilted suede except for the button that goes on the front flap. I am going to look for one tommorrow. I started the second handbag project. and all I have to do for that one is hand sew the lining in place and attach the handles. I am also tracing a few patterns out and looking for inspiration for planning my wardrobe.

WIP: Fall Accessories Project I - Quilted Suede Bag

This bag (V7982 view C) is coming along quite nicely. I was worried in the beginning about all the quilting that is required but thank God for quilting guides.

This guide made quilting the suede a breeze. The bag is nearly complete. All I need to do is attach the facing to the lining and attach that to the bag and when my chain for the handle arrives from M&J Trimming I will attach that and that will be it. Hope to have finished photos soon.

Me in My Burda

Here is a pic of me Sunday in my Burda 4/2008-116 dress. I loved wearing it. I wore it with white crochet ankle tie espadrilles. Mind you this pic was taken with my camera phone.

I am now working on V7982 view c. I finished quilting the fabric yesterday and will cut out the patterns pieces from this quilted rectangle and do the marking. I still have to buy 3 feet of chain for the purse handle. I plan on getting that soon.

While site seeing, I viewed a slide show of Burda's new pattern collection called FashionLine by Burda. these patterns are due to debut in August. Check out the Burda site for the preview. Fabulous offerings- coats, dresses, skirts, and biker type jackets.

Finished: Burda 4/2008-116

I finished the dress. The muslin truly helped in getting a perfect fit. In the shoulder and upper bodice I cut a size 12 and fold out 1/4" in the neckline to remove gaps. I went up to a size 16 in the hip area and did a swayback adjustment. I sewed the jersey using an overlock stitch and triple stretch stitch. This was my first time using these pre-set stitches on my brother XL5700. I love this dress. I will try to get some pictures soon.
Next project- making a paper tape dress form. I definitely need one. My hope is that with a dress form I will be able to fit a pattern much easier and faster.

My First Muslin

Hello. I have blog in a while. Life has been busy, but I am working on my first BWOF. It 4/200-116. Because this is the first time I have every worked with these patterns, I have made my first muslin. It is really worth the effort. I am almost finish making the muslin and already can see the adjustment I need. I am smaller on top and wider on the bottom. I need to take in the neckline area and bust area and so far look like I will need to add to the hip area. I am glad that I am taking the time to make a muslin before I cut into the pretty jersey that I have for this dress. Wish me luck.

Why, Why, Why!

Two weeks ago, I decided to try my hand at an easy Burda WOF dress 4-2008-116. I looked hi and lo for fusible bias tape. After consulting Cidell she recommended Design Plus fusible bias tape. Thanks Cidell! I found that Fabric.com sold it. I purchased a couple package and figure I was ready to make my muslin to make this simple dress. Would you know something would happen it seems to be the way things are going in my sewing room. The Burda 3 in 1 tracing that I had since the 90s fell and the chalk marker wheel became stuck. I tried to move it and noticed that the serrated edges on the wheel was scraping the muslin fabric, not good. Yesterday I got the little wheel to move, but it still scrapes the fabric, so I thought I try and replace the chalk wheel with another hoping that the marker will fit into the special slot that was for the original chalk marker. It didn't work. So today, I ordered the Clover dual tracing wheel. I am so glad Cidell and Cindy posted about this gadget.

Always Follow Your Instincts

Even if the washing instructions says machine wash/tumble dry. I knoew I should have handwashed and line dried this yellow stripe cotton lawn with clear sequins. I just knew it. But instead of following my instincts, I machine washed. Here are the results.

A mess of thread and sequins all knoted up. The fabric now have visible holes where the sequins were sewn.

Oh well. A lesson learned.

A Whole lot of Shaking Going On!

Friday morning I felt as if I was living in California. The Midwest had an Earthquake! 5.4! It happened at 4:30 a.m. All I knew was the I was sleeping and the next thing I knew my bedwas shaking. I live in a small town in Illinois near the Missippi river. The epicenter of the earthquake was in another small towm on the Illimois/Indiana border. Around about 10:00 a.m. we experience a 4.6 after shock. That wasn't as bad a the 5.4. Everything has been quite today. So far.

Fun Lover Sneak Peek and Goodies

Here is a peek at the Fun Lover Tank crochet project. this is the back. I just finish the left shoulder shaping about an hour ago. There was a mistake in the left shoulder instructions, but it wasn't anything to difficult to figure out. The yarn is Patons' Brilliant in Sparkling Rose.

Next I will be crocheting the front.

Also, I had a few goodies to come into the mail today from Newark Dressmaker.

1. The Easy Fit Iron Board Cover. I was in serious need of a new pad for my ironing board. This one has a reflective aluminized finish.

2. A tailor Ham. I needed one.

3. A 1" Bias Tape maker. I figured I'll buy this size first because many pattern calls for this size.

4. Hand needle threaders. Love them. Will not hand sew without them.

5Undergarment measuring tape. I will use this to get an accurate high bust and bust measurement.

Machine sewing needles- Stretch and Universal. Can't have too many of these around.

7. Sewing machine cover. I was just using the plastic my Brother XL5700 came in.

Tracing Wheels

Miss Dish was showing her new gadget - a dual tracing wheel that she will use for BWOF patterns. It is a great gadget. I wanted to show the Burda 3 in 1 Tracing Wheel that I purchased when I brought my first Burda pattern in the '90s.It has a removable chalk marker that can be filled with powdered chalk. It came with white and blue chalk powder. It is also adjustable in widths of 1/2",5/8,1",and 1and 1/2". Since I have a trial subscription to BWOF, I believe I will be putting this nifty tool to use.

I have decided to change my blog name. The other one was not working for me. I think I can live with this one. I have started a spring crochet project. I put down the Icelandic Turtleneck for spring and summer crocheting projects. This one is called the Fun Lover. It is coming along nicely. I have been planning my sewing projects and gathering the materials so right now there is still no FOs. I just been reading all my favorite blogs getting inspired.

Taking a Step Back

Well M5471 is set to the side. Why? I am going back to the drawing board and rereading Fit For Real People. I want a better understanding on how to figure out my fit challenges. I want good fitting clothes not just items to post about. But I am working on planning a Spring Wardrobe. I have some patterns picked out. I have ordered some fabric that will complement clothes that I already own. And I am planning those things that I will sew. As I stated in my New Years Sewing Resolutions that I want to learn more about the craft of sewing. I am going to do just that.
Today I made a great purchases. I found some balls of Patons Brilliant in Sparkling Rose for a $1.00 ea. at Big Lots, a discount store. Big Lots is a fun place to shop because many times the merchandise changes and there is always something new at a cheap price. So now all I have to do is find a crochet pattern.

Fitting Problems

New in Patterns: McCalls Early Summer Pattern came out today. Here are my favs:

Fitting is such an issue for me. I want the perfect fitting garments especially shirts. M5471 is proving to be that challenge. I knew I should have done a muslin. I tissue-fitted as out lined in Fit for Real People by Pati Palmer and Marta Alto. Usually when I hit a problem like this I give up and move on to the next project. But I am going to use this as a learning experience and not give up. I will make muslins for now on. It may be extra work, but at my level of experience (or is it inexperience?) I need to practice different techniques to learn proper fit. I plan is to tissue-fit and muslin fit. I want to learn tissue-fitting because I don't want to have to measure each pattern piece then match to my measurements. I'm I being Lazy!!! Take a look at the bodice and if you can tell me what's wrong. Pleeeeeeeeeease Heeeeeeelp!!!!!!!!! And what is the best method of fitting a sway back? After using the technique for fitting a sway back in Fit for Real People I still had a lot of extra fabric in my "sway ". Help!

Whew! it has been a little while since I have posted. I have been doing some crocheting and some sewing. Hopefully next week I will have some thing to show. I have been thread tracing M5471. It seems like everytime I try to get started life happens. Isn't that the title of Toya's blog. I agree with her totally. I made a quick project. I will also post on that next week. I did a quick project to get some sewing satisfaction. I have finished swatching my Icelandic Turtleneck crochet project and have now begun crocheting the sweater itself. For those newbie crocheters swatching is done to test the gauge. You have to make a sample swatch with the yarn and hook given in the patten. Then block it. Blocking is just wetting the sample according the pattern or yarn package. Blocking also helps to get a more accurate gauge. The sample is also a way to see if you have the correct gauge and if you don't, then you will need to make another swatch with a diffent size needle. For this sweater, I had to make two swatches and block them both. The first swatch I crocheted to tight with the hook stated in the pattern. So I had to get a larger hook and swatch again. The second was the right gauge. A good book on crocheting I broght to refresh my knowledge about the craft was Crochet for Dummies. I ordered it online at Wal-mart.com.

Well, the holidays are over and the new year is in full swing. To kept to my new years resolutions, I am planning my projects, shopping around for the materials and reading. On the subject of reading, have you gotten your new Threads? Its all about Couture. It have some very exciting articles:

I had finally finished altering M5471. Began to layout the pattern on my fabric. I stopped laying out to check to see if I had all my supplies ( I know backwards), when I discovered that I did not have the right size machine needles. Last week things have been occuring that way. It got me to realize that I have to do better. So now I am following Adrienne's lead and taking time to make some new goals or resolutions if you like. I will list them next time I post because I want to really focus on them and make some personal assessments. I want the new year to many new things. Until next time...

I am a sloooow sewer. I procrastinate. I do everything but sew. Like right now I am typing this when my mind is telling me to get in there and sew. Why can't I be like Erica B., and Tany. Almost Finished Project

Here is a pic of the finished pieces of the crochet project that I have been working on since September 1. The project was a free pattern from Coats and Clark called the Flirty Top. The cotton thread is Aunt Lydia's Shimmer Fashion in off white. It has taken me this long because when I first purchased the thread Walmart only had 8 balls ( I needed 11 according to the instructions). However, last night after finishing the ruffle on one of the sleeves, I realized that I still need another ball of thread. Sooo, I have to order another ball and while I'm ordering I might as well order my yarn for my next crochet project the Icelandic Turtleneck from the Crochetme: Fueling the Crochet Revolution Book. Until this book I did not think I could crochet a turtleneck sweater. That all for now. Happy Thanksgiving.

Just an update on McCalls 5471. I have pre-shrunk the Japanese shirting by washing and drying the fabric three times. Then ironed to remove any wrinkles. Next fitting the pattern. I do believe I will try to learn how to do a muslin. This will be my first. I always thought muslins were extra work. Bye for now!

I have put much thought into why I sew. One, not being able to afford the trendy $400+ dresses etc., sewing offers me the ability to sew inspired creations similar to my favorite designers. Second, I get the color and fit that I want. Third and most important, I get the satisfaction of accomplishing something with my own hands. I want my closet to be filled with clothes that I will love to wear over and over. In the next few days, I am going to be reading articles and books on how to build a wardrobe and how to pick colors to coordinate my look. Stay tuned...

Bernina has introduce a 3D sewing software program called My Label. It is software that allows you to create a wardrobe with a custom fit. You enter your body measurements, choose from 20 built in patterns, choose the fabric and then the program shows a 3D model of the outfit you chose. The program looks interesting. If you have not gotten your copy of Threads january 2008 #134, I highly recommend that you do. There's an article called "Mad for Plaid" authored by Mary Ray that gives helpful tips on sewing plaid. McCalls 5466 is the pattern used. If you have not sewn this pattern yet, most certainly read this article. I also like the "Let your Feet Guide the Way"by Carol Laflin Ahles. She gives tips on how to improve your stitching using feet with verticle guides.

Organization is very helpful when sewing. It is difficult to sew when you have to look everywhere for everything. So I am first beginning a reorganization of my sewing area. My sewing area become cluttered with books, magazines, fabric, and notions before I finish my sewing project. So I have brought some shelves, a hanging fabric organizer, and plastic drawers to put thing in. Once I am done with that I am going start my next project McCall's 5471 view B. I am making it in a white Japanese 100% cotton shirting from Fabric.com. The texture of this fabric is beautiful.

This is my first post for Sew What's Up With That. I have Adrienne to thank for that. She convinced me to start one. This all started with Her post "I Need Help". We discuss and agreed to begin a journey together to end our uncordinated sewing projects. Hopefully we will end up with a more cordinated wardrobe. Any ideas to solve that problem Adrienne?
